An Efficient Architecture for Displaying JPEG images in Cell Phones

In this paper, an efficient architecture is presented for displaying images in JPEG format in cell phones. The architecture mainly emphasizes on efficient computation of 2Dimensional Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform (2-D IDCT), which is the most computationally intensive part for JPEG image decoding. Pipelining/interleaving technique is employed in our recursive computing scheme to overcome the clock rate limitation in recursive computation and to reduce the number of multipliers and clock cycles. Furthermore, the cosine terms involved in the digital filter coefficients are pre-calculated and are implemented as fixed coefficient CSD multipliers. Using Architectural schemes like pipelining/interleaving, the computation of an 8x8 IDCT block is completed in just 209 clock cycles. This architecture can be used to decode JPEG images in real time with the help of external micro-controller.
